Missions

The Bay Road Presbyterian Church is committed to a strong missionary presence to spread the Good News. There are a number of projects that the congregation supports on an ongoing basis and a few for the short term.  If anyone is interested in more information on any of the missionary projects listed, please contact the Missions Committee at the Church.

Missions and Missionaries We Support...

  • Women at the Well Ministry:

Dan Stine, a teacher at the Thai Christian School in Bangkok, Thailand gave an update regarding his missionary work in the Far East to the congregation recently during his brief visit home to Queensbury.  He is interested in recruiting teachers for the school.  Contact the Missions Committee for information on how to participate or  to make a contribution to this valuable ministry. (Brochures are available on the Mission table in Anderson Hall which include detailed information on Dan's ministry).  Click here to view Dan's newsletter  Newsletter '06

The Open Door Soup Kitchen is located on South Street in downtown Glens Falls, New York and serves those in need of a meal, Christian spiritual guidance and socialization.  Volunteers are needed at most times, but the Bay Road Church has committed to provide a number of volunteers on the second Wednesday of each month, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Check the Calendar of Events page for upcoming opportunities to help out our neighbors in this most worthwhile local project.

  • Bay Road to the Bayou  a.k.a. The Gulf Coast Mission Trip

2008 Mission Trip

Over 3 consecutive weeks in March a total of 57 members of the Bay Road PC; First PC of Glens Falls, Warrensburg, and Hudson Falls, the Brunswick Church, as well as family and friends, traveled to Pearlington, MS to help rebuild homes and lives devastated by Hurricane Katrina.   Overcome by a 20 foot storm surge (the height of the electrical lines), every home was destroyed.   Now 2 ½ years after the hurricane less than 5% of this small town has been rebuilt, although the encouragement and hope brought by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) volunteers is making a difference.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

For Quentin, a retired accountant who served in Vietnam and Korea, there were mixed feelings.  As his home and yard (and fishing boat) were transformed, his hopelessness lifted, but was followed by a sense of selfishness.  After all, why should we help him, and not all the others who are still displaced from their homes?  Each day brought an opportunity to do ministry, with words, as well as actions.  Soon there were smiles amidst the tears; hugs; and conversations about faith, hope and grace.

In all, an amazing amount of work was accomplished on three homes, and the ministry continued as 22 members of the Brunswick Church arrived in Pearlington and took over the week following our departure.   The coordinated effort of multiple consecutive teams was wonderful, and very productive.

However, there was a new challenge this year.  Our team had brought more than $14,000 to be used for building materials, and had spent only a portion of it.  With the assistance of PDA two additional families were identified and are being “adopted.”  These families represent the “working poor” and are not eligible for any grants or governmental assistance.  Terry and Rita lost a good portion of the money they had with which to rebuild to a fraudulent contractor; Jamie and Tracy have run out of money for rebuilding despite doing all the labor themselves.

Both families were visited throughout the final days of the mission, and the new hope on their faces brought tears to our eyes.  It is our prayer that there will be sufficient funds to purchase the building materials needed to get both families back into their homes.  And PDA has committed to providing the volunteer labor to make that happen over the next few months.  “Out of Chaos, Hope” is the mission; we have been ever so blessed to be a part of it.  Those interested in joining the 2009 Gulf Coast mission team, our fourth year of the mission, may contact Marcia Etu, marciametu@gmail.com.
