March 2007 "Highlights" FROM
PASTOR SUNG’S DESK:
For the newsletter this month, I want to focus on the topic of “Mission.” Not to mention that our mission team is in Louisiana serving the sufferings brothers and sisters right at this moment, Bay Road Church has been very strong on Christian mission. We are a mission oriented church. And I am so thankful for that. It is our great joy to hear the updates from the missionaries whom we are supporting. And I pray that God will continue to bless us as His instrument to deliver the Good News to the suffering brothers and sisters in the different corners of the world. As I mentioned earlier from the pulpit, there are two type of missionaries: the missionaries who go and the missionaries who send. Without sending missionaries, going missionaries will not be able to carry out their mission. If this is true, I am confident that our short term mission team will accomplish what God has sent them for in Louisiana. And I can be equally confident that our sending missionaries here will continue our support with prayers. That being given, I want to focus on the mission in the areas near to us. Although structured mission is important, such as short term mission trips or what our Mission & Outreach Committee does, we need to realize that we are missionaries in the settings of our lives. Our families and children to begin with, we can consider our work, our school and our neighbors as our mission from the Lord. We are called by God into His Kingdom and reign as His children, and yet we are sent to represent Him to everyone we encounter. Even within our church, I see mission fields – tired brothers and sisters, our youth and children and many different committees for different areas. Unfortunately, not many people see these areas as our mission, and not many people step up to be missionaries for these fields. Through this writing, I want to appeal to my brothers and sisters. I want to appeal that our calling within our own church is a crucial mission. We have a number of missionaries in different corners of the world whom we support with prayers and monetary gifts. And they are truly great blessings for us. Yet, we have many fields within our own congregation and in this Northeast area where we need workers for the Lord. My brothers and sisters, I am praying. I am praying that God will ignite the fire in your hearts that there will be a burning calling within you for our youth and children, for our worship committee, for our women’s and men’s ministry, for the open door ministry, for the upstate jail ministry, for the elder share ministry, for the Deacons and Mission Committee ministry, and so on. For these mission fields, I want to be the sending missionary. Would you like to be going missionaries? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2007 BIBLE STUDIES Mondays - Everyone is welcome to attend this study on Revelation from 7:30 PM – 9 PM at the home of Kathy O’Day in Warrensburg. Regular Session Meeting February 6. 2007 A regular meeting of the session of the Bay Road Presbyterian Church was held on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 in the Prayer/Cry Room, with dinner at 6:00 and the regular business meeting at 6:50 pm. A quorum was present with the following Elders in attendance Carol Bayle, Pat Engwer, Chris Henneke, Greg Mc Dowell Laura Mitchell and Lou Russell. Rev. Sung Hee Lee, Moderator and Elder Debbie Collin, Clerk of Session were also present. Elder Jan Kenyon was legally excused. Pastor Sung Lee opened the meeting with prayer along with a reading from Ephesians 6:10-17, the Armor of God. Pastor equated this passage as to us being in the uniform of Christ similar to our country’s special forces. He pointed out that the armor described in the passage, is designed not to runaway. We always need to protect our backs. We are called to fight not runaway from the battles we face as saints. We need to discern which battles are to be fought. As Christians, we are in the battle zone for Christ. A MOTION was made by Chris Henneke and seconded by Debbie Collin to alter the docket to move New Business before the Treasurer report. PASSED. The next session meeting will be March 13, 2007 beginning at 6:30pm. New Business: Melissa Bramladge would like the session to approve of our church hosting a “Compassion Sunday. She passed out information pertaining to what this would involve. After much discussion, a motion was made by Debbie Collin to approve of hosting Compassion Sunday with the dates changing to another time of year instead of during Lent. Pat Engwer seconded the motion and it passed. Treasurer’s report reviewed. John Meinrenken submitted a report but was not able to attend. It appears that all bills are being covered. A MOTION was made by Lou Russell and seconded by Chris Henneke to accept the Treasurer’s report. PASSED. Trustees report: A MOTION was made by Greg Mc Dowell and seconded by Carol Bayle to approve of the Trustees report. PASSED. Deacons Report: A MOTION was made by Laura Mitchell and seconded by Pat Engwer to accept report. PASSED. Clerk’s Report: The Sacrament of Holy Communion was served on January 7, 2007. The following were served communion in their homes by Pastor Sung Lee and Elder Debbie Collin: Ruth and Bruce Smith at 49 Bean Rd., Katskill Bay; Frankie Waite received communion at The Stantons Nursing Home; Bill and Florence Seibert (Carolynn Raven’s parents) at 26 Pinion Pine, Queensbury. A MOTION was made by Lou Russell and seconded by Chris Henneke to approve of the Clerk’s report for December’s regular session minutes and the special session meeting minutes. PASSED. The Statistical Report will be reviewed during the next week by the session and the approval will be e-mailed to the Clerk. Carol Bayle and Greg Mc Dowell were welcomed as new session members. We are grateful to have them join our session. We look forward to working with them. Old Business: A MOTION was made by Greg Mc Dowell and seconded by Debbie Collin to approve of a special session meeting on February 11, 2007 at 2:30 pm at the church for the purpose to discuss “lifting the ban”. PASSED. The session discussed the three options given to them by the Trustees to change the plastic stain glass on the chancel. The session decided to keep the arch shape, finish it out with sheet rock, and insert the cross in the inner space. The session would like to replace the cross with larger wooden hollow cross with indirect lighting. It was decided to make the changes of the chancel in steps. Also the session would like to see a high table (in front of the cross) with a large open Bible. A motion was made by Debbie Collin and seconded by Lou Russell to send our suggestions to the trustees for review. New Business: Colleen Russell would like to organize fasting group for our church. She would like to offer it during Lent with a small group possibly during Holy week (Maundy Thursday through Good Friday). A MOTION was made by Debbie Collin and seconded by Lou Russell to grant permission for a fasting ministry to begin with guidance from Pastor Sung Lee. PASSED. Ministry Reports: The Mission Team’s request for a covered dish luncheon was referred back to them to request permission from the Mission Committee. It is up to the discretion of the Mission Committee not the session. A MOTION was made by Chris Henneke and seconded by Laura Mitchell to accept ALL ministry reports. PASSED. PASTOR’S REPORT: At the request of the Pastor, Chris Henneke and Carol Bayle will coordinate the soup and bread Lenten meal and Bible study. Pastor‘s report was approved and seconded. The next session meeting will be March 13, 2007 dinner at 6:00pm. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned with prayer at 8:45 p.m.
MS AWARENESS WEEK - MARCH 5TH THRU 12TH In December of 1998 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In January of 2000 I had to leave work and go on long-term disability. Eventually, when it was evident that I was not going to be able to return to my job as medical transcriptionist at Glens Falls Hospital my employment was terminated. This hit me probably harder than hearing that I had MS. I had worked at the hospital since moving here and getting married. I enjoyed my job and coworkers. I grieved over this loss and knew that it was the right thing to happen. When I was diagnosed with MS I didn’t know anything about the disease and subsequently learned more about it. I went on one of the MS drugs to help slow the time between exacerbations within the first few months of being diagnosed. I have gone through the ups and downs of being diagnosed with MS. I know that the Lord has been with me every step of the way. I know this because each step of the way from having to leave my job and losing that income and security He has been there with me. I know that if it weren’t for me being home I never would have been able to be with Dyan over the last couple of years when she really needed my attention. Had I been working I surly would have lost my job over all the time I would have had to take off. I have taken a very positive attitude with my MS. I believe that I was given lemons with the diagnosis but I chose to make lemonade with them. I have involved myself with the National MS Society and facilitate the local MS support group. We now have two meetings a month, a night meeting and a daytime meeting. I live one day at a time and sometimes I break it down even to an hour at a time. I do what I can and know that there are many other people who are worse off than me. My daily challenge is fatigue and I have learned to listen to what my body is telling me. Yes, I get frustrated at times but I don’t stay there, I deal with it and get on with me life. I have MS but MS doesn’t have me. With my faith in the Lord and loving friends and family I am truly blessed. I am sharing this information because I truly believe the Lord has a plan for each and every one of us and that things happen for a reason. It all depends on what we do with the lemons that we may be handed. Lovingly submitted by Lou Ann Holt __________________________________________________________________________
Easter Greetings to our friends at Bay Road Larry and I recently attended the showing of the new film about the Lost Boys. The title had something to do with "God Forgot Us." I was struck by the boys' reaction to our secularization of holidays. Their question to the Americans was, "Where does a rabbit come into the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ?" Already, stores are stocking up on Easter baskets and stuffed bunnies. There is no mention of the Lenten season in the printed news that I can see. Some churches hardly acknowledge this holy season. I worked with a Coptic Christian from Ethiopia recently. He spoke of how their church fasts for forty days prior to Easter. They give up meat, sweets, and any personal indulgences. They meditate daily on the suffering of Christ for mankind. It was no light thing that Jesus Christ did for humanity. We could never suffer enough to pay Him back, only show our gratitude by giving everything we are and have to Him. Blessings on Bay Road Church. We look forward to worshipping with you again in May. Several snowfalls and some icy conditions have kept us busy keeping our driveway, parking lot and building accessible to the congregation and staff. One of our attic squirrels was caught and released (far away) and we hope to catch the other one soon. The office door lock and door frame was repaired. The pressure relief valve and air expansion tank were replaced on the boiler as both had failed and a leak occurred flooding the boiler room.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A BIG THANK YOU! Many Thanks to everyone for helping send the Mission Team to Houma, Louisiana this month!! We had hoped to take a team of 40, but god was more than faithful. Forty-two will be serving, 20 men and 22 women. and in his goodness, the last person to join the team is a professional cook! WE are very grateful to Janice and Andy holding for hosting our fundraiser “an evening at explore!” it was a wonderful event for children of all ages, and included good food, a great silent auction and the services of a massage therapist. Thanks to all of you who helped by baking, donating auction items and working that evening! Nearly $2500 was raised, and we will receive an additional $1000 from the donor who challenged us! With your help we will be taking over $7500 to buy building materials. The team will be working in the Terrebonne bayou area, where over 12,000 homes sustained severe flood or hurricane damage. None of the homes were insured. We hope to help rebuild 4 or 5 homes, and extend the love and hope of Christ to the families we meet. Thank you for equipping us to go and serve the suffering people along the gulf coast. Your love, gifts and prayers mean so much! The 2007 Gulf Coast Mission Team
don't forget to spring your clocks ahead one hour on Saturday evening before you go to bed!
