From the Pastor’s Desk: Waiting for EasterI believe it is safe for me to say that the spring is here. Although we still see snow on the field, we can certainly feel that the harsh winter chill has lost its power. I know, we cannot predict the weather in the Northeast. We might yet have another snowfall. However, even if we have snow, it will not stay for long. Esther and Sunja are talking about what type of vegetables they will plant, and Jojo wants to go outside and ride her bike. It seems that everything and everyone feels that lively air of spring time. Among all seasons, I believe, spring most well reveals the meaning of Easter. Over the winter, the trees and grass stay dead. We don’t see many signs of life from them. Yet when spring comes, we discover the symbols of life in different corners of the field. What a great reminder of resurrection they are! Indeed, Christ went through the death yet rose again. In that resurrection of our Lord, we too will be resurrected. This is one of the most important foundations of our faith in Christ. Without the belief of resurrection, Christian faith is nothing but a “good teaching” which we can find in all other religions. However, as essential as the faith in eschatological resurrection in the end time is for all Christians, I want to move our attention to the little things in our present days in which we can experience the power of resurrection. Although mountains and fields will be covered with green in a few months, the verdant lives begin with small shoots poking through the dirt. That is what resurrection means to us today. Indeed, we will be risen in the day of our Lord’s second coming. But the power of His resurrection does not have to wait until the last day. It is working in our lives on this very day. Yes, it might be small. Yet it certainly pokes through the rigid hearts and frozen circumstances. There is not a single brother or sister in Bay Road family who does not have his/her cross to carry. It might be our child(ren). It might be our parent(s). It might be our co-workers or boss. It might be our finances. It might be the oppressive social systems or physical illness. We all have frozen fields of suffering in our lives. Yet, I pray and trust that God will send the air of His spring in our fields. That we might see the heads of green shoots poking through the frozen land. Yes, they will be small and tender shoots. Yet in a few months, there will be verdant green all over the fields and mountains. Whenever I see my brothers and sisters aching in the cold land of trials, my heart is broken. And it has been broken many times. Yet I will not let go of my faith that God’s season will come in their lives – the season of Easter, the very season when the tender shoots break the frozen land of suffering. There are spots of snow piles here and there on the field, but they cannot keep these tender shoots under the ground, when the air of spring blows. Here I am, on the verge of Easter, praying that God’s air of spring will blow on the lives of my brothers and sisters. _____________________________________________________________

2007 Gulf Coast Mission Trip Report
“I can’t believe it! It’s wonderful! Why would all of you come down here to help me?” asked Linda, trembling, with tears streaming down her face. Linda and her son Charlie had been living in a tiny FEMA trailer in their driveway, displaced from their home for the past 18 months. Ours was the 6th work crew to help them rebuild, and had the privilege of getting them back into their home. By the end of the week, virtually everyone on the Bay Road team had helped to make it possible.
An earlier crew had mucked out after Hurricane Rita left 3 feet of water in Linda’s 3 bedroom brick home. Another did mold abatement. A third replaced the roof, a group of college students installed ceramic tile flooring throughout, and the most recent group sheet rocked, taped and painted.
Linda had received $5200 from FEMA, which bought the shingles for the roof, the ceramic tile and some bedroom furniture. There were some building materials on site left by other volunteers, but Linda was out of money and had no way to finish the job.
With the mission money raised over the past few months and God’s help, we were able to make it happen. Team members bought materials (bathroom vanity, toilet, mirrors, towel racks, shower curtain, mattresses, linens, towels, screening, mini-blinds, kitchen cabinets, counter top, kitchen sink, refrigerator, washer/dryer, doors, molding, light fixtures, paint, polyurethane) and we went to work.
The team installed 2 bathrooms, the kitchen cabinets/countertop and appliances, polyed doors/painted trim, hung doors/closet doors, installed doorknobs, framed doorways, installed trim/baseboards, washed windows, replaced screening, hung mini-blinds, sheet rocked the laundry room, installed ceiling fans and light fixtures, cleaned, made up the beds. We are so blessed to have been a part of His mission and so are each of you that helped us to go. Linda and Charlie moved back in our last day there!
Our three other work sites were just as awesome. One group laboriously installed a new roof that had been leaking badly ever since the storm. What was initially thought to just need patching turned out to be an entire re-roofing job. It was so bad that one of our team fell through a decayed section! Thankfully no one was injured. At the end of the week, we had one sprained ankle and a lot of splinters, but rejoiced in the protection of your prayers.
Another group worked on the exterior of a barn that is being converted into a home. The family lives down on the bayou, at sea level. Instead of rebuilding their home, they now live in a former haymow, high enough to be safe in a future storm. An amazing transformation!
At the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance volunteer village a fourth project was underway. A large permanent building is being erected with a kitchen, large dining/meeting area and bathrooms. It will be used by PDA until their work in the Louisiana Bayou area is completed, and then will become a community center and hurricane evacuation site. Many team members helped install and tape sheet rock, and vinyl siding was installed on the entire building.
In addition to the construction of buildings, was the building up of lives, both of those we served and those on the team. Amazing stories of faith, hope and love. Please ask us to share. Why would we send/go on a mission team to serve the suffering people on the Gulf Coast?
“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:3-6. These are verses that Linda has claimed, as she, a pastor’s wife, lost her husband to a massive heart attack, is raising a handicapped son, and is surviving Hurricane Rita and its aftermath one day at a time.
________________________________________________________________________ A Message From Missions & Outreach
On Sunday, March 25, 2007 we were delighted to have Sue Balfour as our guest speaker for the Mission Minute. Sue has helped to start The Open Arms Pregnancy Center for young pregnant women in crisis. At the center they are offering all kinds of help and guidance to these young women. As Sue explained, Glens Falls did not have anywhere for these young women to go for help except to Planned Parenthood. At Planned Parenthood they are usually guided to abort their babies. At Open Arms Pregnancy Center they can receive help, guidance, love, and alternatives to bring their babies into this world with lots of help. The Center just opened in the beginning of March and has already helped 3 women. Open Arms Pregnancy Center will make a difference one woman and child at a time.
We are hoping as a church to help support their mission. They need financial help as well as volunteers in many aspects. Do you knit, they can use blankets. Do you want to help wash clothes, or maybe train as a crisis counselor? They have many jobs that need to be filled. If you have any questions or are interested in helping because God is leading you there, you can contact them at 793-7516 or call Sue Balfour’s Realty Office.
Maybe we can help to make a difference!

CHUCKLE CORNER KIDS IN CHURCH... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3-year-old Reese: "Our Father, Who does art in heaven, Harold is His name. Amen." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A little boy was overheard praying: "Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I am." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After the christening of his baby brother in church, Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car. His father asked him three times what was wrong. Finally, the boy replied, "That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home, and I wanted to stay with you guys." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One particular four-year-old prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets." _________________________
