OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1850 by the rugged Scots who immigrated to Queensbury from the borderlands of southern Scotland, the Kirk (Church) on the public highway (Bay Road) was built in 1853 and was known as the Associate Congregation of Queensbury.

After a closure of about eight years around the Civil War, the Reverend James Lamb reopened the church in 1869. Becoming part of mainstream Presbyterianism the church was admitted to the Troy Presbytery (regional governing body) and was renamed Bay Road Presbyterian Church.

From 1869-1981 the little church suffered the plight of many small country churches, with a small congregation and little money the church was forced to share pastors. From 1921-1953 Bay Road church was part of the Larger Parish, a group of five churches who shared a pastor and many social activities. For the next thirty years Bay Road Church remained small, sometimes on the verge of closing, but always rebounding and remaining open.

1981 marked the beginning of a new era for the Bay Road Church. The Reverend Richard S. Bird became pastor of the church and in 1983 was installed as the Church’s first ever, full time pastor. Under his leadership the church grew in a few years, from a small rural church with 15 members to a church of 200+ members.

In 1985 due to the growth of the congregation the 1954 Sunday school wing became part of the sanctuary and Anderson Hall (named for long time member Audrey Anderson) was built.

BAY ROAD CHURCH TODAY

So where does that leave us? In 2001 The Church of Jesus Christ at Bay Road, (Bay Road Presbyterian) is a church that is powerful, dynamic and still active in our community and around the world. Although we are small, our heart is big and we have a vested interest in missions both local and abroad. Our local interests include but are not limited to The Open Door Soup Kitchen and reaching out to those in need with donations of food and money. Overseas we support several missionaries.  Our commitment to missions abroad does not end there however. We believe in and take seriously the Lords call to us through the Great Commission:

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing then in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

                                                                            Mathew 28:19-20

This is the reason that we support not only ordained missionaries but also encourage members of our church to do short term mission trips. Bay Road is a church founded on the authority of scripture and the Lordship of Jesus Christ. If you do not currently have a church home we invite you to join us on Sunday as we worship the Lord together.
